metal sink plug + rubber washer

Try as I might I can't find a washer to fit my metal sink plug, so bought a new plug, which doesn't fit properly, any ideas, please

we have had the same trouble with some as they are very old and the wrong size but a quick solution I found to work was just to wind a rubber band round the edge of it
