I have been " googling " for ages looking for some 38cm wide canvas suitable for recovering directors chairs. I have found a couple of sites which sell canvas for deckchairs at a standard width of 44cm but this would mean cutting and hemming which would weaken the strength of the seat.
Grateful if anyone knows of a source. Thanks in advance.

Thank you Mosaic for such a prompt answer. I would still prefer to find some 38cm but I will keep abakhan in mind.
Yeh but by the time you've put a 2cm hem either side, you have your 38cm wide. I wouldn't leave a raw selvedge - it goes 'frilly' over time.
you might get something suitable from a ship chandler's shop.

The seat of the chair is fixed by sewing the material around a rod and fitting the rod into a groove. Double thickness of canvas could be very tight but could be tried. I thought the selvedge of deckchair canvas was very well sealed! I shall probably have to go for deckchair canvass in the end. Ship's chandlers is a good idea but we are very " inland ". Thanks anyway.
You've probably found this one already but thought i'd post it anyway, just in case

Thank you all for your kind help. I expect eventually I shall have to have stripey chairs instead of the nice blue ones I used to have. Today I suppose most folk would just throw them out and buy new ones but I have not grown up with that mindset. I have 3 sites that sell deckchair canvas so thank you all.
