Exterior wood, frames facias prime undercoat gloss finish - hardwearing advice ?

Dear good AB’ers on good exterior wood, frames facias etc that have been well sanded & prepared ( house 40 years old ) and filled with quality wood filler Cuprinol Ultimate can I use solvent based exterior wood stain (light colour – Cuprinol , I have an excess of this .. ) INSTEAD of a wood preserver as a primer, then use a Solvent B. undercoat ( *Onal ?) and gloss top coat like * Sikkens AZ for a real quality hardwearing finish that will for years ? ( I know solvent is more hardwearing than water based ) Or should I go the Weathershield route water based .. Could I also use the wood stain for fencing to make it hard wearing thanks good AB’ers GL

I'm not quite clear, Graham. Is the woodwork stained at the moment, or painted (and you've sanded it off?)
The best-ever exterior paint I've used has been Butinox 2, solvent based, opaque white. My windows, done 10 years ago, are still in prime condition. They say to use a primer on bare wood, but I've found that isn't necessary - two top coats alone work fine. Not cheap, but absolutely worth the price.

The exterior wood painted at present but flakey - cheap paint, will sand get as 'much off as possible' down to bare wood -painting is all about the prep work I have always been told - do a great job with the preparation - thanks all GL.
Heathfield's yer man, Graham, but if you can't find Butinox, here's one I used recently.............. no primer, just two coats. Nice colours too.....

On top of WB .. Dulux weathershield water based (satin)
On top of oil based .. Dulux Opaque finish (usually gloss)
