In Clayton Carson's collection of King's writings etc. (called an autobiography, it's the closest you'll get as he never wrote one) if memory serves he said "he had his views, and I had mine."
Malcolm X was very mocking of King in the build up to The Million Man March on Washington, likening him to an 'Uncle Tom' type of character when J.F.K tried to get him to stop the march.
Personally, I think they knew each other, they needed each other, but they were unlikely to ever be friends...
