June 20, 1782... along with the Great Seal, into which the bird was incorporated.  Benjamin Franklin was said to have preferred the wild turkey.  This seems to have been somewhat tongue in cheek, however...

I don't think it was so tongue in cheek. Benjamin Franklin was a little off, and just thought the turkey was a quite majestic and proud bird. They are the only poultry native to North America after all.
