Royal Artillery in St Helena

My Great Grandfather was a Gunner in the Royal Artillery based on St Helena Island, I know he was there in 1886, as he married a local girl, and had a child born there. What would the Royal Artillery be doing there in 1886?
Any ideas, suggestions, websites or information would be greatly appreceated.

Hello there,
St Helena is believed to be(or was) Britain's second oldest colony. It was in a very vital tactical sea position when we had a large navy.
Have a look at Wikip[edia about St Helena here:~
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Helena
Its a very large entry, but you can scroll down to the section that contains history around1886.

Is a very interesting(if shorter) site.
