Mayor of Drogheda

My friend is just beginning family history research and has asked me to help. She has Irish ancestry and reckons that her grandmother Mary Read (or Reid,or Reed) was the daughter of the Mayor of Drogheda, probably late 19th or early 20th centuary. His first name was Francis. She has given me his surname as Read ( or variation of spelling). I have been looking for info about Drogheda and it's history including mayors of the town, but am unable to find anything that makes sense to me. If there are any Irish historians out there who could help,I'd be very grateful

Old Drogheda Society may be able to help. They publish a journal. Google them.

Thank you. I'll give the Old Drogheda Society a try. My friend got her grandfather's name wrong. He was Frank Dennis and he died in 1957

Thanks for your reply Brendan. My friend made a mistake with her grandfather's name. It was Frank Dennis. His daughter married a Mr Read. I believe one of his sons was a footballer. If you have any more info. please can you share it. I did hear from the Millmount Museum but am still waiting for more info from them

The Mary Read visited her brother Dominic shortly before he died. I have a couple of great photographs of them. And i interviewed Dominic about his father's years as Mayor.

I also did some research Frank Dennis and the founding of the national GAA.
