NG after a name.

I have been told of an entry in a journal of 1880 listing the officers, etc. of the first Oddfellows Society in Ribchest/Longridge. One of them is James Hesmondhalgh, NG. Does anyone know what the NG stands for? The other officers' names are followed by "Treasurer", "Secretary" etc.
