I've loved reading about this, I found it fascinating how enterprising they were. The pic download is particularly interesting as a first hand account. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2524252/How-Londoners-celebrated-River-Thames-freezing-frost-fairs-ice.html

The river couldn't be used in the normal way for trade, so they set up stalls to sell all sorts.
1963 was last complete freeze in Windsor. 2012 was partial freeze in Eton.

Snap tambo! Those pics are amazing aren't they!
Some really fascinating and engrossing illustrations there. It'd be great to see the expressions of the people depicted if they could see what the Thames and its surroundings look like now. I'm wondering how the horses got traction on that ice; and if the bridge support columns were given any protection against the crushing force of the ice.
2012 Eton freeze brought out a jaguar to lap water on edge of river, driving Tambo (avatar) into a frenzy.
Question Author
Stuey, I thought exactly the same thing regards traction. Some people lost their lives as the ice thawed!
