I presume he was forbidden to re-enter Britain after going to fight abroad...

No,Juno,I think him and his friends were either stopped at Southampton docks or were prevented from crossing the French-Spanish border.Some of his comrades did get through however,but paid for it with their lives...and no I don't think there were any restrictions put on their return to Aberdeen.
