Does the newspaper you read necessarily reflect your intelligence/education level as has been suggested on another thread?

Absolutely not, I have just written this on the other thread....

//I think it is wrong to assume how well educated or not someone is by the paper they take - I know folk who have 3 or 4 different ones delivered, presumably they find something in each to interest them.//
No it shouldn't.

I don't mind admitting that I'm not very well educated but I have been known to read the broadsheets on the odd occasion. I don't actually buy any papers but if there is a Metro lying around in the tea room I'll read it whilst waiting for my lunch to ping.

I think the Red Top crosswords are easier, but I don't actually get to see that many so not 100% sure.
I didn't see the other that to which you refer.

Yes of coarse it does, broadly speaking" you see few " workers" "working class" social class whatever, reading the Times, Guardian, Independent or the Financial times.

Generally speaking.
I think the newspaper people chose often is to with what they are interested in. My OH buys the sun because of it's sports pages. He has half and hour for lunch at work and that's when he reads it.
I think it's totally wrong to assume that someone who reads the Times has an IQ of a zillion whilst those who read the Sun have just enough intelligence to tie their own shoelaces. I regard myself as slightly above average intelligence being a product of the old grammar School system and i read the Mirror on a daily basis, the Express on Sunday's and, whenever i visit my Guardian reading brother, i can quite happily spend a half hour perusing it's content and having a bash at the crossword.
I read the mirror but I can spell 'of course'. lol. ;o)
don't let mikey get to you, joe. everyone's uneducated by his reckoning.
Joe...I have never suggested that only uneducated people read newspapers like The Sun. I am merely saying that the more educated you are, the less publications like The Sun will be of interest to you. It would be counterintuitive to suggest otherwise. What is education if it doesn't raise your expectations ? Class has nothing to with the matter and I will not be drawn into a typical pointless British debate on the subject.

If I wanted to read about trivia, such as soap stars, pop stars, footballers, and D list celebs, The Sun would be a good place to start looking. As an educated person, those things are of no interest to me whatsoever. That is neither right or wrong.... it just is !

On the subject of sport, the quality papers, like The Times has far superior coverage than its sister paper, The Sun. So if people really are interested in sport, than perhaps they should give the quality papers a try for once.

Can I suggest a halfway house here. Try the i paper, the tabloid version of the Independent...lots of pictures, all in colour, but with text that is worth reading. At a distance, folded up at least, it could nearly be The Sun, or any similar tabloid !
No, I don't think so. I don't read any newspaper regularly but I'll pick up whatever is left lykng round in waiting rooms or other peoples houses.

I actually used to bring the Evening Standard home daily for man hostage on way home from work - I'm likely to only read the letters page unless there is something of particular interest I'm following.
To answer the question- no not necessarily. I read everyday:- The Guardian because that reflects my political beliefs probably the most and is therefore interesting to me, The Daily Mail because of exactly the reverse and I like to be offended and outraged and keep tabs on the opposition, then I will read a specimen red top Mirror or Sun etc to get a different viewpoint and finally one of the European papers to get a non British perspective on world affairs. I usually also do the Times Crossword because it's the best Crossword paper. Now based on that am I thick or not? Can you even judge such a thing? I don't think so. My Grandfather who is staying with us is a very clever man, articulate, incisive and exceptionally political but he only ever reads the Red top of those mentioned above, so how would that work? You have also remember that intelligence and education level are not even remotely linked ;-)
dont buy papers & get news from tv or freebies ie Metro. I will stalk a mirror/mail buyer for the xwords ;)
I buy newspapers for their crosswords and the Mail On Sunday is my favourite, I pull out the puzzle section and read the You mag, the paper itself goes straight in the bin more or less, in the week it's DM for crosswords unless I'm feeling in a brainy mood then I'll grab a Guardian.
I think The Mirror now is a shadow of its former self. But I still read it. But if I'm honest I wouldn't expect someone who took The Daily Sport to be up to speed with the intricacies of Middle East politics.
The weekend is full of crosswords for me rocky. I only do the prize ones now. I would love to have a go at the Mail although I can't be doing with all that faffing around with wigs, false beards and dark glasses, just to go down to the newsagents to buy the bl**dy rag !
Of course not necessarily but it does give pointers to those who read the Times, Guardian and Independent - in my opinion anyway. However the majority of working people don't have time to pore over the papers and just pick up something easy to read during breaks/lunch.
I don't buy papers but look online.
Lol Mikey, the Sunday Mail prize ones are great, £1500 bumper one and a very good bare cryptic (my favourite). They might be worth digging out the dark glasses for.

///majority of working people don't have time to pore over the papers and just pick up something easy to read during breaks/lunch///

Easy to read, um, I see!
Thanks rocky...I might try next weekend.....I don't have to read the paper after all ! The Mail is about the only national paper that I haven't tried for crosswords. I have won a few times in the Sunday Times, Guardian, and Torygraph, although I won't do the Guardian again until they change the crappy prizes. I really want to win the Saturday i paper, as I would love one of those DAB radios that they give away !
On the rare occasion I read the Guardian I found it too lefty and suited to the laid back, lazy, idle, dyslexic, racist, dreaming cannabis mind-blown reader....IMO.

Theyre best for pet litter ;)
