I work for Royal Mail and have done so for many years...
At a team brief recently we were asked to bring our passports to work to prove our British Citizenship..
We were told that this is part of a government scheme and not Royak mails
Has anyone else been asked to provide their passport at work...?

what if you haven't got a passport?
Company OH works for has been doing this for ages, the penalty for hiring illegals is too steep.
If it was me I would be asking to see written proof of this government scheme....but you might not want to stir up trouble. Me, i LOVE stirring up trouble.
Yes, it isn't uncommon, although I think Royal Mail have not explained it very well to you.
rocky, what if you haven't got a passport?
They won't sack you just because you have no passport. I am sure that for the few legal British Citizens who don't have passports there will be other checks that can be done
Woofy, there is something in place for non passport holders but he's not sure what it is as the boss deals with it.
Now that's what comes of going to prepare a meal in between finding a link and clicking 'Submit' :-)

for you or the kitty-cats?

:-)
Yes, we were asked to do this where I used to work over 3 years ago, looks like Royal Mail are late again! LOL!
I suppose we're being overrun by Bulgarians coming over here to deliver our mail in the rain.
I've been asked to provide proof of British citizenship in several jobs. A birth certificate used to be the norm but now it's a passport. It's not a particularly new practice.
It might also be to do with RealTime payroll reorting to HMRC which came in last year. Data is sent electronically and passport number is a desirable but not mandatory field.
Do you have to be a British citizen to work for the Royal Mail then?
I think it is an obvious nonsense as, as has been pointed out, not everyone has a passport. If employed they with have an NI number though so I don't see what this is all about.

Although I am aware the government seems to think employers must act as policemen and catch illegal immigrants. The whole thing is wrong. Fair enough an employer ought not deliberately hire illegals at low pay because the illegals are desperate, but it is beyond the Pale to try to make them responsible for a task that is rightfully the responsibility of the law.

I think your management is making excuses for the decision they have made and don't want to take the flak for. Seems a typical thing for them to try on.
We had to do it a couple of years ago. It's nothing to do with whether you are British or not, it's to prove that you are legally entitled to work in the uk I think
