From the Latin
Requiescat in pace

It is a happy coincidence that the initial letters of "Requiescat in pace" ( may he/she rest in peace) are the same as the English initials. Originally the Latin initials appeared on gravestones.
It's shorthand for 'we hope you don't go to hell or get up and start walking around like a zombie'.
