These would have been the first people he met

I am never sure why the USA always says Columbus "discovered" America.

Columbus did 4 voyages West, but he never actually set foot on what is now the USA.

He tended to land further South or East in the West Indies and parts of South America.

He was not the first European to go there anyway.
Brendan the Navigator, an Irishman, was there years before the Italian, as was the Scandinavian, Leif Ericson
The natives discovered Columbus - on their beach.
America isn't just the USA. Columbus was apparently the first one to go back and tell anyone about it.

The Arawak were the first, I think.
