No, we don't know. Genesis simply says 'fruit of the tree of knowledge'. Almost every fruit under the sun has been suggested, buy there's simply no way of knowing.

If you look closely into myths and stories you see the apple portrayed a lot as an important fruit. Like in snow white where she goes into a coma from eating an apple. Or perhaps when the bibles were written apples were just a rare fruit considered to be "forbidden". We can't know.

specifically, it's the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which sounds more like a botanical metaphor than an actual plant. No mention of apples.

I suspect that it is seen in the popular imagination as an apple primarily because of bad art; apples are a common (and cheap) model used by artists.

It is a fable and not to be taken too seriously. Archaeology has demontrated that humans existed on earth millions of years before the mythical Adam and Eve, however, if they were the first humans we are all related and I haven't had my Christmas card from you yet!
