the USA equivalent of your civil registration system is administered at state level in the US, the census however is far more informative on the lives of a family than ours and so the info you need will probably all be on one entry. The 1900 US census if pretty complete for all states (at the time). I needed info on a relative that emigrated to New Jersey and so I emailed the state archives and they gave me the info by return, amazing service

try http://www.telusplane.../public/mtoll/bdm.htm it's a site which has links to free research sources for the US. NY's records are pretty extensive, so you've got a good chance of finding him. Good luck!
