Want something like a gameboy for my son to occupy him on oir travels,just want something cheap are thm gamebou advances ok?are ds's too old for him?

No, a DS is not too old for him at all
My daughter had one at aged 3 with appropriate games, she is now 8 uses it regularly and is on her 2nd one (an upgrade)

I wouldn't bother with the Gameboy, go right to the DS
