A router attached to your phone line, and a wifi receiver attached to the laptop.

you will modem attached to the phone line with a paid subscription to an ISP (internet service provider) for either ADSL broadband or a dial up connection (most ISP's provide a modem router combo with the connection). The modem can either be attached to your laptop via USB or a eithernet cable. if an eithernet cable is used you could also attache the modem to a wireless rooter and with wireless available on your laptop as well either via an internal wifi or a expantion card.
