sims 2 pets help

just been given Sims 2 Pets expansion pack and installed it on my laptop (windows Vista). Started the game up using Seasons and my saved lot is there but when I click on an item to make the sim do something the action bit disappears b4 I have any time to click it! help help please! been to a web site and downloaded a patch but it hasn't helped!
