OK, I've had a lovely day off - had to take my last day of annual leave by today - and I've spent most of it in the kitchen (now there's a surprise lol - made a brilliant Irish soda bread, a fabby white farmhouse loaf, some cheese scones and a chocolate cake).

Right, back to the problem - I don't normally make cakes and have no idea what to put on the top of the cake. It was baked in one piece and has risen to about 5" - there is no central filling. I don't like cream and don't want to add too much more sweetness to the cake (which does look rather good hehe). I have some dark chocolate (G&B) and some milk chocolate (Tesco's finest) but I've also got some low fat cream cheese and I was wondering whether it might be a nice idea to melt some of the chocolates and whisk in some cream cheese, then spread that over the top of the cake - what do you think ?

I've also got loads of other interesting stuff - all manner of nuts, dried, fresh and canned fruit, butter and sugars (granulated, caster and muscavado but no icing sugar).

You have probably stuffed all that cake down your gob by now..........but I would have just melted the choc and then drizzled it over the top...Oh and i may have punched a few holes in-like with a drizzle cake-so some of the choc would have gone inside...yum

LOL - not quite all of the cake has gone, just one tiny weeny slice.... well I had to check for quality control, didn't I ? It was flipping fabulous actually - not bad for a non cake eater hehe....

I didn't think of just pouring chocolate over it.... and as for punching holes - brilliant idea... I will pour them down into the few cracks that appeared because I could not resist checking on how it was doing in the oven yesterday afternoon .....
I bake at work almost every day......it is deadly!!!!!!!!.....no matter what I make ,or how many times I have made it......I MUST test......I will have Buddha Belly soon( pasta walks off,muttering:"I must not eat cake,I must not eat cake,I....")

J pointlessly offers pastagal a slice of home made chocolate cake with a chocolate and coffee topping (I did as you suggested but added a little rich black coffee......).. phwoar... lol
I'd say make a layer of chocolate icing (melt cocoa powder, some butter/marg in a pan and add the icing sugar) top the cake with this and then grate some of the chocolate over the top.
