Hi Lilacben
you could cut out some stars in various sizes and colour and dust them, place them on the cake, and then if you look on some craft sites you can find wired cake decorations, I bought some last year, they were pearlescent stars, and then just add them wherever you please, I don't think you'd have much success if you try to wire on the ones you make from fondant or modelling icing, I'll look for the link and post it if I can find it.....hope this helps a little.................welsh
Hi lilac,

Alternatively,
three or four slightly bent wires with shorter pieces of wire also bent coming off the main one with stars stuck on the end?

Many thanks to you all for your replies. great ideas.
i made a star topper just like you describe for my baby's naming day. The theme was silver stars and i wanted an explosion of stars for the top.
I used cake wire and cut out stars of different sizes from icing. Insert the wire while the icing is still soft and then leave to dry. Once dry you can wet and sprinkle edible lustre.
i also found, in the cake shop, some riboon which was actually rows of silver puffed stars, so i cut it up and put some of those on wire too. I used some wire on it's own and curled the ends round a pencil, like boingers!
I searched and searched for something to put all the stars in and after days of looking i actually use a deoderant lid. I filled it with oasis and covered the whole thing with top quality holographic paper ( I actually did this in strips as i wanted a very snug fit.
The wire easily popped through the paper and the oasis kept them stood upright.
i put the whole thing onto a disc covered in the same paper and it was very effective.
I suppose it looked a bit like an upturned hat!
I recently bought one from a baker for my daughter's birthday and everyone said it wasn't as nice as mine.
good luck!

crisgal, Hi again it is for next weekend. many thanks again. I have now been told it is for about 100 people!!!!!!!!! so think I will have to do a two or three tier cake. Have got 11,8 and 5 inch tins. so will put one ontop of the other. Thought if I put them on thin cake boards between each one then she could take the tiers apart to cut. A lot of chocolate I think.!! Will have to work it out for the shopping list. haha.
If you are planning to stack chocolate sponge then it's a good idea to use plastic dowell set into the layers to spport the next layer.

Hi crisgal, I am sorry I have caused you problems looking for photos.! please don't go to too much trouble. Have now made the stars and waiting for them to set. I have to paint them silver, electric blue and purple. Never done this before so not sure how to store them.Would you have any idea.? oh dear the things I do to myself.!! xxx
no-one's going to eat them are they? I just stored mine flat on a tray, with foil loosely on top to keep dust off. Once very hard and dry they will keep in a tupperware or tin. It's no trouble by the way, I just can't work the old PC. My hubby's a techie so it's easy peasy for him. We had rellies over last night so didn't get much chance.
I would like to find them for myself anyway. Reading your post reminded me of the cake -and a lovely day!
i have a little photo book with all the cakes i have made over the years and realised that there isn't one of my 'little star'. x

crisgal, Oh dear think I may have made rather too many!! I was thinking of putting the stars over the cake as well but now I think about it people will eat them.!! I made it from half and half mexican paste and fondant icing (the packet one in supermarket) I had read it somewhere to make them like that so they are not too hard. But can you eat Mexican paste? xxx
