Joy oh joy, I have just discovered a copse of Kentish cobnut trees, absolutly loaded with nuts.
At the moment the nuts are still green.
What I would like to know is, do the nuts turn brown and sweet if picked when green, or should they be left on the tree to turn brown?

i prefer the nuts when left naturally to turn brown. Make sure you then get them before the squirrels do!

They taste much nicer if left to "brown" naturally.
We have a small acreage of these nut trees, and so can afford to leave them till they are brown.
BTW you say you have "discovered" a copse of these nut trees,is this on your own land (I hope) if it is not you could be accused of stealing them(by the legal landowner)

These cobnut trees are on land owned, I believe, by the local council parks trust. So, being accused of stealing them would be on par with stealing blackberrys or sloes from the same land.
Just to clarify, do you leave them on the trees to turn brown?

Yes,leave them on the trees as late as possible,of course if they drop you can retrieve them.
On the other point, according to the law ANY land not owned by YOU (and without the owners permission)from which you take ANY fruit/nuts/wood etc is regarded as stealing. This would also cover Council Land.
I know because someone (not local) tried to steal a large quantitiy of our cobnuts, and I had to threaten them with the law before they stopped.
So I have looked into this.
If you want to be sure(and legal) I would ask the council, they may be glad of someone removing them.
I don't want to be a wet blanket, just don't want you get any aggro.
