I have a large tub of Greek yoghurt where the best before date is 01 Aug 08.....12 days out of date.

Now it's only going in a curry tonight, has been kept in a fridge and is sealed.

Would you use it ?

best before dates are a guideline as to when the food starts to deteriorate. use by dates have to be strictly adhered to.
as it is yoghurt it is bacteria anyway and should last past best before date, but 12 days seems a bit in excess, and personally I wouldn't use it.
I use yogurt well past the sell by date. I always smell things and if they smell ok, then no problem. Have never had any ill effects.

Thanks guys...i'm tempted to do the same grasscarp. I've never checked the sell by date on eggs either...i just use them !!!
if it's got no mould on it, or doesn't smell 'off', then i would use it. same with any other food stuff.
Would'nt bother me. As it has'nt been opened , you'll find that it's perfect
PS. If you're rolling round on the floor tomorrow, you can call me at,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
What's wrong here?

Thanks guys....i opened it, it smelt fine and i've just demolised a gorgeous curry.

Nice one.
lol hammerman... are you still with us ? If so, then next time just go on smell and appearance... If you have passed over to that great big cookshop in the sky, then I guess you are entitled to haunt all tubs of yoghurt for ever more........

Still here thanks with no dodgy bowel movements to report !!!

thanks again
I'd have used it, too (glad you enjoyed the curry, hammerman!). Personally, I think all these "best before" & "sell by" dates are the reason (unfounded) for us wasting so much food. Back when I was a little lass (groan...) we didn't have all these daft labels on food - we just used our common sense. If it was mouldy or rancid, you didn't eat it; if it wasn't, you did - and I'm still here!!
No problemo hammerman
My mum used to use eggs three weeks past there sell by date and live to be 90
My mother in law -who lived till she was 97 used to say if you were unsure of anything that had gone past the sell by date just taste a small amount and throw it away if you dont feel happy using it .I have found that if a yoghurt has gone off the lid usually blows
