I was abit flummoxed when I read this as well-I used to work in the trade and thought that restaurants had to supply tap water free but nothing surprises me nowadays-when are they going to start charging for the air we breathe?

I haven't read or heard of any new legislation. I hope it doesn't happen as it could be problematic for some businesses. Having said that, businesses which DO offer tap water often get good customer response.
At the end of the day, it really has to be up to the business to decide.
Let's cut back on government interference where possible :)

This is such an old question on AB(sorry!)
Restaurants CAN(if they wish) charge for tap water.
They are NOT obliged to supply tap water(even if requested).
There is no legislation which covers this however.it is just that there is no law that says charging for tap water is illegal.
I hope this clarifies things?
