How to make thick cupcake frosting?

It's my best friend's birthday next week and she's bonkers about Sex and the City, so I want to make her big cupcakes covered in thick frosting like the ones in the show (from the NYC bakery Magnolia).

Normal icing is too thin - anyone have any good (and easy!) recipes? I've thought about doing a cream cheese frosting... but all suggestions welcome.

Wow! I'm spoilt for choice - cheers Pasta! My friend is a superfit marathon runner who is on a permanent diet - so think I will go for the richest, most delicious one I can find - it is her birthday, after all!
