I didn't even know you could freeze milk??

I've usually got an emergency pint of milk in the freezer, I don't think I'd re-freeze though.

Boo - I freeze the milk I have when I go on holiday - it freezes perfectly well.
I also freeze cream in ice cube trays - useful when I need a bit of cream for recipes.

In plastic bottles ethel? Doesn't it swell and burst the bottle?
|

The bottle does swell a bit, but it has never burst.
I also freeze cheese.

the bottles do swell slightly, but not enough to burst. Works very well.

Milk effects you very quickly, you are probably fine. Food could technically be frozen and refrozen, even raw chicken or pork without cooking, if you kept the conditions optimum but the chances are that you haven't done that. A second freeze can disrupt cells so that bacteria can feed off them if the thawing process has been executed properly. You need to keep defrosting foods below a certain temperature so that the pathogens dont activate. It might be 4 degrees but im not entirely sure. Either way, its just easier not to do it.
I had a dodgy tummy, from eating icecream that had melted and been defrosted a few times back in my ridiculously poor student days.

I think from Marg0's last answer that she is jesting with you.

yeah it's ok i is back after eating my frozen cheese.
great answer thanks, I didn't know that. It takes so bloody long to defrost (try it) that you often just leave it out. All becomes clear now about chickens as well (defrost in fridge overnight, I could never work that one out). Given the pain of a bad tummy it just aint worth it.
Boo, I've been freezing it for a while, it's great, so convenient. Comes out more or less good as new. Give it a wee shake.
Frozen cheese? For real?
I still can't figure out what to do with chicken. You buy a fresh chicken....can you freeze it, thaw it, cook it, freeze that? Or does that follow the ideas you stated?
Thanks.

It takes even longer to defrost when you're gagging for a cuppa! LOL
p.s. I don't EAT the cheese while it's still frozen LOL

Eugh, cheese ice-lolly, Lakitu!
My friend was surprised (and amused!) that we freeze milk. But we don't use a lot of it, so a frozen pint comes in handy. If we do a 'big shop' and buy a couple of pints, they sit nicely in the freezer. Just defrost thoroughly or you end up drinking milky ice!
Goodsoulette are you a food biologist? Your answer was really thorough and very informative!
I just knew you weren't supposed to freeze/thaw/refreeze. Had no idea why not!

Is it only full fat milk you can freeze?
|
|
|
No, I only drink semi skimmed.
|
|
|
isnt ice cream made of milk?? just a thought....
|
|
|
May try it then, I only drink semi skimmed as well but had been told you could only freeze full fat

Boo - I freeze it in the bottles I buy it in without problems.
I have semi-skimmed milk and I don't know why but it seems richer after freezing. Try it
