I know that its very old hat but I still like those cubes of cheese, with pineapple and a silverskin onion, on a cocktail stick !

Hmmm post disappeared.

Nice suggestion but I'm not sure cheese and pineapple will cut the mustard, so to speak.

Suits me when I'm feeling chavvy but not sure it will suit local dignitaries!

To be clear, i'm wanting to avoid the ubiquitous smoked salmon and cream cheese and egg mayo type of offering.

It is just a small number to be catered for and i'd like to avoid wastage.
are you the guest or the host, Eccles?

I must admit to sharing mikey's taste on this; and I think they've been out of fashion long enough not to be naff any more. Obviously, they wouldn't be the only thing on offer. Overall it might depend on time of day - are we talking afternoon tea, early evening appetisers, substitute meal or what.
Sorry eccles...misunderstood your OP !

I was served some of those Swedish meatballs as work do 3 weeks ago, with a choice of sauces to dip into, and they were lovely !

By the way, there are lots of variations on the cheese on a stick theme. Try pieces of strawberry, for instance, instead of the pineapple. The sweetness of the strawberry goes very well with the sharpness of the cheese. Or try some kiwi fruit instead !
I personally like and serve dill buttered toast with salmon mouse, crushed pineapple and prawn vol-au-vents with wine salt and big mushrooms stuffed with Cumberland sausage meat and sweet onion chutney. Pureed Pumpkin and cheese Gougeres are also fab in my book :)
how about some sushi along with other type fish,
everything.

I'm the human equivalent of a dustbin, start and one end and work my way down.

I didn't even mention cake.......
And that!

Going retro could be a theme...not sure the great and good of the town would appreciate it though :-(

Kvalidar I like thethe thought of gougeres, even if my Choux pastry skills are lacking....
prawn vollies... deep fried camembert balls with cherry coulis.....olives...mini cheese tartlets...chicken bites in puff pastry...haggis balls...teeny sausages in bacon...loaded potato skins...
Nip along to Iceland! Super selection - mini pizzas, pies all sorts of goodies. :)
Forgot, sorry, use baby potatoes as mini-bakers with any sort of filling you choose. :)
I'm a dip person in particular taramasalata and hummus with any kind of crispy thing to dip in them. And I'm also partial to anything with smoked salmon on or in it.

As for sweet things, we usually have a cheesecake which I make.
Mini fish and chips in a little newspaper print cone, they had them at an event I went to and I thought they were great!
Little honey and mustard sausages are one of my favourites too! Simple but so nice!
I like short crust pastry spread with mild mustard and then rolled round hotdogs and served with tomato sauce.
Cheese straws
Baked camebert
Baba ganesh
Kibbeh and those little cheese parcels that you find in the Middle East that look like mini samosas ( can't remember the name). Bruschetta and toasted bread rounds with tapenade.
And chicken satay skewers
