I bought this a few years and was very disappointed - it was more like bread than cake.
Is that what it should be like?

Not really, it should be very light
Dunno, but like you I bought one couple of years ago, it did not go down well and I ended up making bread pudding with it.

I won't buy another one until I've tried a sample. Mine was turned in to bread pudding too
It is a sweet bread, but shouldn't be heavy.

Not a fan myself.
Send it here...I'll have it!
Only bought it once and didnt rate it, very over priced for what it is I think.
very popular here in madrid, its supposed to be a light sponge with currants or sultanas, or with choc chips
'orrible stuff...shove it in the trifle as a base for some nice sherry !!
Wouldn't even make a trifle with it to be honest.
It's not a sponge...so I wouldn't make a trifle with it either. I *would* use it for bread and butter pudding, though.
I much prefer it over a heavy fruit cake.
If you are stuck what to do with I it highly recommend Delia's steamed panettone pudding. I have made it every Christmas for almost 20 years and it goes down well with everyone.

Give me panettone any day....I'd rather eat that than a gooey cake from Greggs.
birds like it !
I genuinely love the stuff, with butter on it.

I've always preferred a bread-style cake - cheapskate bun, iced finger, panettone... much better than a factory-made cake
"Cheapskate bun"

What The Funicular?

Chelsea bun.
don't really eat cake much..apart from my own occasional baking...
it is a bit on the sweet and dry side
If it is dry hen it has been stored too long.It should be slightly moist.
^then^
