I have this casserole bubbling gently away in the oven, thanks to Barmaids suggestion and Delias recipe.
I'd never had a pickled walnut but have just eaten one to try it, they're really, really nice..apart from looking like a lump of coal crossed with a mouse brain!
Four tons of sprouts will accompany it.

I really like them. I also tried them first with venison.

I spotted a jar of cooked chestnuts in Home Bargains for 89p which I will be going back for.
Hope you enjoy it Ethandron.

They look terribly unappetising, but taste delicious in that casserole.
In Dari (one of the Afghan languages) walnuts are called half brains due to their appearance!

Oh, and open a window with all those sprouts.......

I don't really like the taste of game, always thought it a bit like the smell of something musty but couldn't resist this when I looked up the recipe after you mentioned it Barmaid. Always up for trying something new.
Ummm, I love chestnuts and always have a vacuum pack of them in the cupboard, they also look like mouse brains don't they?
That's an interesting fact Eccles. Yes, windows will be wide open later...
Should have said, we're having a bottle of Tesco finest Stellenbosch red with it, it's one of The Guardians 50 best wines for Christmas and says on the bottle it's a delicious accompaniment to rich game dishes.
Looking forward to the whole meal,we've started our Christmas early :)
What time do we have to get there, and where do we need to go? Sounds delicious

There's only enough sprouts and wine for two, sorry ;)

We'll, what can I say, this was one of the best casseroles we've ever eaten, and I don't say that lightly. Very, very highly recommended. Ten *
Pickled walnuts are gorgeous in a salad with goats cheese but they're quite high in carbs.
Walnuts are very good for you though.
Oh my gosh, I'm so trying this recipe!
Question Author
Why so high in carbs?
Do you have the recipe?
