I have been told that a cup of Cocoa or Ovaltine just before retiring
for the night helps one sleep.
Other people swear by a glass of milk.
Any preferences & why?

Warm milk is supposed to do the job but i prefer 4 glasses of red wine.
Strong black coffee for me, really settles me down for the night!
As long as you avoid caffeine...coffee or tea...you'll be doing yourself a favour.
Warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg
In France, Ovaltine is promoted as an energy and stamina enhancing drink - but we have it before going to bed ...

Thanks everyone for some interesting contributions.
I certainly hadn't heard of the milk & nutmeg one.
I also prefer a G&T before bed but Horlicks is my milky drink of choice because it tastes delicious.
I find milky drinks before bed are very "mucus-inducing".
I tend not to have a regular specific drink before bedtime. Although during the evening I will probably have had a glass or two of low calorie squash.

Anyway, at my age, taking on liquid just before bedtime merely encourages disturbed sleep.
The only time I needed help sleeping soundly Horlicks worked for me.

G & T works for me!
A hot chocolate before bedtime works every time for us!
Half a bottle of wine, two small glasses, makes for a good nights sleep.
10 pints of old speckled hen works for me.....lol
There in an amino acid called tryptophan which the body does not produce. When taken, this amino acid produces the b-vitamin niacin which in turn produces seratonin which acts as a sedative and helps you sleep.
There are numerous foods rich in tryptophan which would help you sleep but the drink which contains the most is cherry juice, but cherry juice made specifically from Montmorency cherries.
This juice is available in Tesco.

If you take the cherry juice yourself are you not getting sleep. JjCon
jennyjoan, if you are having trouble sleeping then the food with the most tryptophan in is turkey. A turkey sarnie and a glass of cherry juice should help you.
It really helped my daughter sleep when she was going through a bad patch of insomnia.
I now take sleeping tablets
Well you are very lucky re the sleeping tablets - I was getting them but my lovely doctor has retired and the other two ladies doctors won't give me them now.
Try the turkey and cherry juice (it has to be the once specified) and let me know how you get on.
I have just remembered that I bought my daughter some Nytol which helped her for a while
