Microwaveable Steamed Puddings "lid" ?

I have a microwaveable steamer. Should a plastic pudding basin "lid" be airtight or allow the steam to enter the basin?

They are never air tight as such, otherwise they'd explode under pressure.
I would just leave it loose...or no lid at all. x

Thank you dizmo and lilacben. I've avoided injury by exploding pudding and hope to avoid my wife's wrath if I end up coating the microwave oven in soggy pudding mix.xx
Mine has holes in the top
