...start advertising some of the items I bought earlier in the day. Why would I want to buy them all again?

I suppose the algorithm for the placement of the ads knows what you've been looking at and so understands what you are interested in, but doesn't know you've actually bought the goods already.
The sites that you might buy from note that you're interested in particular products and place cookies on your computer linked to your browsing. e.g. if you've been looking at skateboards, or even simply at skateboarding websites, you'll get a cookie saying 'This computer is used by someone who is interested in skateboards'. When you come here, AB's server collects and forwards that cookie to the advertising service that provides AB's revenue, so that you'll see ads about skateboards. That will happen irrespective of whether you actually made a purchase earlier or not.
Nosey so-and-sos monitor where you have been. If you object to being spied on run superantispyware every now and again to clear their cookies out.
Drives me mad too lardhelmet, but even more so when. amazon recommend the very thing I bought yesterday. They should be more sophisticated and aware that I did press submit at the payment screen so will not be needing another one for a good while yet.
Having inured myself years ago to TV advertising, doing the same online was a pushover. Chill out.
