Rice Pudding Disaster

Yesterday, I tried to make a rice pudding in my slow cooker. The result was something that looked remarkably like wallpaper glue. I really had no idea that you could overcook pudding rice to such an extent.

It used to work beautifully in my old, heated base slow cooker. This new cooker is far too fierce.

Shall I try again or is it a waste of time and money?

I was given this recipe by a member (sorry, can't remember who). I do keep my eye on it though as it seems to cook quicker than the recipe, I'd say 4 hours was nearer the mark with my slow cooker. rice pudding recipe for rocky: 200grms pudding rice, uncooked 1.25 litres full cream milk (or half milk half single cream (Yum) 110 grms caster sugar 1 vanilla pod or 1...

rice pudding recipe for rocky:

200grms pudding rice, uncooked
1.25 litres full cream milk (or half milk half single cream (Yum)
110 grms caster sugar
1 vanilla pod or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
optional nutmeg to taste ( I use 1/2 teaspoon)

Combine rice, milk, sugar, nutmeg if using, scraped vanilla pod or extract in slow cooker
cook on low 6 hours or until rice is tender.

Stir and add more cream if required serve with whatever takes your fancy. I like a dollop of homemade bramble jelly.
And how long would it take on the hob? Just wondering...

Thanks rocky. I cooked mine for far too long. I'll give it another go.

I can't answer your question, ummmm. I used to cook mine in a very slow oven. I didn't know you could make it on the hob.
I don't like it cooked on the hob, in the oven though, it'll be about 2 and a half hours.
I've never cooked it. That's why I asked. I think I like rice pudding so I might give it a bash.
The main difference is .....less energy used by the slow cooker than the whole oven. Unless you are cooking (say) a casserole at the same time.
Give it a whirl, it's lovely.
I will do. I'll save your recipe :-)

Rice pudding is lovely comfort food and cheap to make, unless you end up throwing it all away! :-)
I made one last week, in the oven. I didn't have any proper pudding rice so just used Tilda basmati, it turned out absolutely lovely. I debated whether or not to do it on the hob but I do like the brown skin and bits round the side of the dish which you get from an oven cooked one but not on the hob.
I don't have a slow cooker but if I did I would probably still cook it in the oven.
Get a tin of Ambrosia.
Nah...home made is always better.
Suppose you could wallpaper one wall of the study......☺

You should have suggested that before it went in the bin, gness. I never thought of that!
Tilly - my friend was cooking rice pudding in her slow cooker last week and it burned slightly but she just added more milk etc and it turned out ok.

I liked it so much that I bought pudding rice tonight and am going to cook it tomorrow. Will use rocky's recipe tho.
The latest models of slow-cookers are not as slow or as cool as the old ones. I bought a couple of the newer ones, and used old recipes, and food has burned or at least dried out horribly, even on the "low" setting. So I got an old model from a car-boot sale, and I find the old recipes still work. I have even found that one of the new models gets so hot that it cracks. And, no, I didn't put it into cold water when it was hot.
Well cooked rice today and maybe 6 hours would be too long in my slow cooker.

Also too sweet for me - 110 grams sugar too much - next time I would make it about 30-40 grms.

But very nice.
Don't actually like rice pudding.
No. it has absolutely nothing to do with having tried to bring home one I made at school in the saddle bag of my bike.
