I've just done a pretty ordinary, basic shop in Lidl and spent £18.70. I've added up the cost of those items on the Waitrose website (choosing their own brands as much as possible) - total cost £35.15. I normally shop in the latter as it's much closer but what can we all do to stop ourselves being ripped off?

Obviously choose Lidl!
stay with lidls, we shop there every week and save loads.
The main difference in Lidl is lack of choice.
If you prefer the surroundings in Waitrose then stay with them and pay the extra. If you'd prefer to save money, switch to Lidl. Have you checked the home delivery service; I don't suppose it's cheaper ?
Lidl do not do home delivery as far as I know, keeping the prices down.
Waitrose does not even try to compete in the 'Basic' supermarket league.
It has always catered for the more 'upmarket' shopper who does not shop by cheapest price. Rather like Marks & Spencer's food.
Waitrose uses Ocado though don't they ? Or aren't they friends any more.
Waitrose does do a basic "Essential" range EDDIE.
I've shopped at Lidl a couple of times and found the taste and quality of quite a lot of their foods not to my liking. I got some battered fish fillets from there once and not only were the skin and bones still in it, I was spiting out scales as well.

My parents shop there all the time and they like it.
You get what you pay for
Ocado use Waitrose, not the other way around. Waitrose now has its own in house delivery service, Ocado deliver Waitrose goods plus other stuff.

I shop at Waitrose and don't feel that I am being ripped off, if I don't want to pay their prices then i don't go there.

Hopkirk, you just beat me to it!
;-)
tiggerblue10 you must have been unlucky we buy the battered cod fllets every week and they are lovely ,also lidls are doing a lot more now .
You are not being ripped-off by Waitrose...I shop there and at Lidl and they are completely different!
I don't have a Lidl anywhere near me so I have to go to Waitrose. I wish I had an Aldi locally, but again, sadly, I don't .
Jan there's an Aldi on Carlton Terrace, Boundary Road, Portslade.
Why is it one or the other? I use Lidl for some of the German stuff we used to buy over there and I always drop into Waitrose for their amazing reductions, they don't mess around with paltry 20%! Does anyone on here use Whole Foods, I think they're only in the London area, but we love to use them in the States, their soups are to die for.
We don't have a Lidl in Brighton.

Well, I suppose there's one out by the Marina, but that doesn't really count.
Chop and change...shop and choose....

I use Aldi lots...and the quality is good.....Lidl sometimes....Waitrose never...x
