I just put them in the oven for however long it says on the packet - they don't burn when done like that.
Put them in a preheated oven at 180deg for 20 mins and check that they are done.
cook them at a lower temperature
By the way andy, don't you feel he only apologised because of the media furore and that he had no choice ?
Are you frying or baking them?
are they home made or out of a packet?

Homemade in a pan, grating whole potatoes.
Do you mean left-over potatoes, either mashed or chunky? I fry them in lots of bacon fat, butter, or margarine until they get browned, and then turn the heat down.
do you par cook yours pots first?

not at expert at this , i can't remember the last time i did it, but i'm sure i grated, then par cooked the pots. drained and squeezed as much moisture out as possible them fried them in a butter/oil mix.

we do have some americans on here who may have a better idea than me, i just remember thinking it was a lot of faffing about, nice but a lot of faff
I've never cooked them using grated raw potatoes..You're going to get a lot of moister to deal with.
Mccfluff, that's exactly why I mentioned left-overs...Much easier isn't it?

I think the oven baked one you can buy are not a patch on the real thing, done in the frying pan.

You have to keep an eye on them and remove them from the heat before they are black.
