Do scallops keep okay if they are frozen and if so can they be cooked from frozen or should they be defrosted?

To avoid frozen scallops wear thicker underpants.
They can be frozen, you can buy frozen scallops. I would thaw them gently first as if you cook them from frozen the outside may well become overcooked.
Yes, you can....the maximum recommended storage time is only one month though. However, these times are usually conservative.....
Yes, you can, flobadob - but be cautious, because they may well already be frozen when you buy them, and defrosted. It'll tell you on the packaging if they are not to be frozen a second time.

They are still in their shells at the moment boxy, fresh off the boat.
In which case - yes you can, and I'd thaw them before you use them later.
I buy frozen scallops and defrost them in the fridge for a few hours, I would not recommend cooking them from frozen

Since you can buy them frozen it's possible. But do not pour hot water over them as soon as you decide to cook the frozen once. Put them in cold water and defrost only in this way.
I've never defrosted anything by pouring hot water over it!

they frequently come frozen from chinese supermarkets

yeah agreed above - I wouldnt freeze again
and blimey no I wouldnt cook from frozen
as they are usually seared in Chinese cookery, and searing aint sudduv good for coking frozen fude
