I want to substitute cows milk for coconut milk, but I'm a bit confused as to what I should buy? I'm talking about milk I could have on breakfast cereal, as well as to drink - not to cook with.

Thanks.

This is what you want...and I'm pretty sure it's not the same as coconut water...

coconut milk isn't milk. might taste ok on cereal i suppose.....
(Apart from smacking open a coconut) the tinned stuff is just that I think, pure coconut milk.
I have started using almond milk and love it. I've used soya milk for years but this is so much nicer. You can get sweetened or unsweetened (which I prefer) and it's really lovely.
is very calorific, are you sure its what you want?
what are you presently using coconut milk for that you'd want to substitute cows milk?

Yeah, I realise I wouldn't be able to use it in all milk situations, but I do eat cereal quite a lot so wondered if it would be ok for that.
I always thought the stuff in tins was for cooking, and would be creamy?
The untouched milk from the coconut is clear. I like the taste but I wouldn't put it on my cereal.
right, confused by the op.

tinned stuff is quite thick, you can also buy it in dessicated block form, grate and mix with water to taste
Depending on what type of cereal you have Oatlea (or other oat milk) work quite well.

Bensmum, I did think about using Almond milk - but I don't like almonds.

Fluff, oh really? Hmm. Well yes, it is what I need. It's either that or almond milk.

HS, sorry, I don't understand? I don't use it for anything, but I *want* to use it instead of cows milk. Am I making sense? lol :-/
not to me I'm afraid
The milk doesn't taste of almonds Bluestone - it just has a sort of creamy, vaguely nutty taste that goes really well on cereal and in drinks. There are all sorts of alternatives to cows' milk though - think it's a case of trying a few.
The white creamy stuff couldn't replace milk.
Question Author
Yeah, I get that it isn't actually milk. I'm not going to put it in my tea! lol
I suppose what I'm trying to say is I want to use it as a milk alternative.

Sorry, HS, I know I'm not being very clear, I want to use it on cereal and, as I don't like almonds, this is the only other option (I'm following a specific diet). I've only ever seen coconut milk in tins, which I assumed would be thick and creamy - definitely not what I want. I can't really be cracking open a coconut every morning :-)

EC, my cereal will be substituted for mixed berries and nuts, so It's got to be something that goes with that.
You can buy the actual milk. Maybe try an Asian shop.
Question Author
Bensmum, ah! Well I will give that a try then. Thanks :-)
Ummmm, no white creamy stuff. It's got to be pure coconut milk. Do you think they sell it in supermarkets, or would I have to go to a specialist store?
Question Author
Perfect! There's loads of those around here. I will try and get some tomorrow.

Thanks all.
I use Activia pouring yogurt on my cereals.................
I like it as a drink.
