Whilst we're on the subject of coleslaw.........

I LOVE coleslaw that you get if you actually go out somewhere for lunch and get given it with a side salad, for example, at a pub.  But, I find any coleslaw brought from a shop/supermarket has a really strong distinct flavour, which I don't like.  Anyone else notice the big difference?  I'd have thought pubs/cafes etc would buy similar stuff just in very large amounts, so don't know why it tastes so different, why can't we buy the nice stuff?!

Most restaurants can make it fresh because it' so easy and I think they use mayonnaise. Shop bought versions have to have loads of chemicals in them so the vegetables dont go bad (you seen how long that stuff lasts!) also they use some sort of watery salad cream ...ughhh

zipadeedodah are you insane?  Or just a coleslaw virgin?  I can totally understand your rant if you are unaccustomed to making your own coleslaw. I find it's one of the only things that never tastes as good from a shop, apart from hummous.  It's a bit of a kerfuffle to make but maybe give it a go.  xxx

Yeah I hate that strong salad cream type coleslaw, I much prefer the kind you get in restaurants/pubs, it does taste much better with mayo then salad cream. I buy cheesy coleslaw these days it knocks out that ghastly sour flavour!
I agree too, and I make my own if I'm having people over for a BBQ or something, but otherwise I get Morrisons premium coleslaw, which is much nicer than the other ones I've tried.

Probably abit of both sunflower68!! That makes sense Laura-sakura...would probably be even less appealing (like most things I expect..) if I actually knew what went into the shop bought ones!

We make our own at work and I add half salad cream and half mayo, delicious!

I think most restaurant make their own it is more economically, the ingredients doesnt cost that much just the work involved. But some do buy theirs in tubs, these are different from the supermarket ones because they are for catering use and only available at cash and carry, you need a membership (fee/non-fee).

i myself LOVE LOVE LOOVE kfc coleslaw, no shop bought can compare!!

Try making coleslaw with mayo and a splash of coconut cream - WOW, creamy, a tiny bit sweet and awesome.

Got the idea from USA who advertise it as 'coconut coleslaw' suprisingly.

Tesco Finest coleslaw is lovely too
In  a previous workplace the cook made it with an olive oil, single cream and balsamic vinegar dressing.  Delicious.

..in all the resteraunts , cafes, and pubs I have worked in we always made our own, much cheeper, when I make it at home I like using half mayo and half natural youghurt, and also adding some apple n raisins...mmmm...must go chop up some cabbage...
