Has anyone here bought live lobsters and cooked them?

I fancy doing Lobster Thermidor.

Yes.
Couldn't do it. Either way - not th e plunging or the slowly warming them up. I can only buy them ready cooked or in a restaurant.

Care to expand, Mark?

I'd love some advice about how to handle them and cook/kill them in the most humane way.
Yes NoM..I only buy them live( I make the mistake by giving them names! ;) ), put them in the freezer to sedate them then cut them in half.
I can't afford lobster but I believe the freezing method is gaining acceptance.
Make sure you don't take the bands off their pincers!

Just get a large pan of salty boiling water and drop them in head first. There's really nothing to it and, contrary to popular myth, they don't scream.

Anyone got a good recipe?
I use this one but I make it spicy by adding chilli because I am obsessed with it! lol

This looks pretty good. Don't, as I did once, experiment with garlic - it totally ruins it!
Ah, my favourite food! But I prefer to just have melted butter over it, rather than Thermidor. Lobster has a delicate taste and I always feel any sauces can easily spoil this. As for how to kill it ... Here are some suggestions:

When my father had a restaurant our chefs used to cook Maine Lobster, which was flown in live from Maine in the US for us every Friday. I remember they used to hold the head into the boiling water, killing the Lobster instantly, then dropping the rest of the body is a few seconds later. Just be careful not to burn yourself.
lovely dish and I'll catch up tomorrow with a recipe - the freezer way is popular indeed and my sis uses it. For me, the brain is so small, as sharp knife through the weak point on the tete and pull straight back and split them.....
^^ I love Carakeels lobster!!
if mega fresh then steamed for me, you can crack the claws with your fingers (in Rhode Island for example) - and I don't think they even need drawn butter, otherwise a Thermi is wonderful with the two sauces coming together - almost heaven on that merger!
