I've never seen a TV chef wash lettuce.
I have never washed an iceberg lettuce. I take off the outer leaves and rip apart the rest (never cut with a knife).

I never wash lettuce .Most of them are grown in hothouses these days .You rarely see a slug on a lettuce these days .I pick it over and brush off any suspect black bits which are only earth anyway .
You have to eat a bucket of muck before you die as my old Mum used to say :) |

It's not the bugs that bother me really, it's more about washing off pesticides. I suppose with the iceburg, the chemicals wouldn't penetrate the inside.
I doubt they use pesticides much rocky .It's a quick growing crop with a high turnover .
Saint Delia doesn't wash hers either :) http:// |
Delia's hands give me the creeps so i can't make her recipes without thinking about them and it puts me off the food.

Question Author
Thanks all, I'm officially not washing iceburgs anymore.
Do you believe Delia wipes every lettuce leaf with kitchen roll. I find the easiest way is to rinse it,put it in a tea towel and shake it outside.
