# Can some one explain Fl.oz?

I have noticed on our kitchen scales that we can weigh fluid ounces, we also have fluid ounces on our measuring jug.

I was under the impression that fluid oz was a measurement of mass rather than weight.

If I measure out 10 fluid oz of rice and 10 fluid oz of water, the mass would be the same but if I then weigh them both the weight would be different.

Im confused.

I think fluid ounces is the volume rather than the mass. 08:27 Tue 01st May 2012 fluid ounce is a measure of volume not weight 08:28 Tue 01st May 2012 And you need to storing your rice more carefully. :) 08:30 Tue 01st May 2012 Question Author Bibblebub, thats what im saying, why do I have a fluid oz on my digital scales if it is not a weight? 08:32 Tue 01st May 2012 One pint = 20 fl oz = 568 ml For water 1 fl oz does actually weigh 1 oz ("The imperial fluid ounce is equivalent to the volume occupied by 1 imperial ounce of water weighed in air at 62 °F") So for a denser liquid (eg sugar syrup) 1 fl oz will weigh more than 1 oz, but for a lighter liquid (eg petrol) 1 fl oz will weigh less than 1 oz. 08:36 Tue 01st May 2012 Question Author sunny dave, so what you are saying is weighing a fluid oz is not a exact measurement but a guestimate based on the weight of water. 08:52 Tue 01st May 2012 I'd stick to pints Ratter...with a nice big head on the top ! 08:53 Tue 01st May 2012 Correct - unless your scales have some way of you inputting the type of item you are weighing. 08:54 Tue 01st May 2012 Water, milk, eggs, butter - 1 fluid oz = 1 oz. For converting fl oz to weights for other ingredients, there are conversion calculators such as... http://www.calcul.com...0]=10&liquidTo[18]=18 09:28 Tue 01st May 2012 I suspect it is all rather academic. The recipe will state how many fluid ounces of the ingredient you need to measure. 10:16 Tue 01st May 2012
