yeast is a plant which lives everywhere. Yeast for baking is grown in vats on special mixture, then compressed and dried.

Although they used to be in the plant kingdom, they now reside in the "Kingdom Fungi" in fact in the ascomycotina division of the kingdom fungi. http://www.sidwell.edu/us/science/vlb5/Labs/Classification_Lab/Eukarya/Fungi/
