Tomatoes

Is anyone able to find tomatoes that actually have any flavour nowadays? I read recently that tomatoes are now grown specifically for their shelf life and that's been at the expense of flavour. I can believe it! All the tomatoes I buy now are completely tasteless.

I know home-grown tomatoes are usually best but I'm not a gardener and I want the convenience of buying them. Salad tomotoes are the worst but even the tomatoes-on-the-vine and the small cherry tomatoes from the market and farm shops seem to have lost their taste. I only use tomatoes now for colour in various dishes and resort to puree or ketchup when I want flavour.

Does anyone recommend a variety of tomato or shop/outlet where I can still buy tomatoes that taste of tomato? Thank you.

I totally agree Andyvon, tomatoes used to be a favourite of mine, not these days!....they have no flavour at all, the only ones I enjoy are the one I grow myself, but that season has long gone!...........I just do not buy them anymore, they are awful!...
cherry toms and vine toms are very tasty and sweet.
I find most vine toms, very tasty.

do you smoke Andy?
Eating tomatoes that are picked when ripe, and then left in the sun.

Cold destroys the flavour, and your shop-bought toms are undoubtedly refrigerated at some point.

Seriously, if you don't want to grow your own, move to the Med.
I find tomatoes very bland. The big ones that you get in the Med are the best for flavour. Maybe try a deli that does fruit and veg.
There. 2 votes for the Med... don't forget to send us a postcard.
cherry tomatoes still have a bit of taste but toms on the vine are tastier than the bog standard ones.
Nowt tastes right from supermarkets !
Cucumbers are exactly the same. I've grown my own cherry toms and cucumbers and they have been very tasty unlike the ones you get in the shops.
yes lovely with a little salt added. must be eaten at room temperature.
Also, you want a great tasting tomato in the UK, buy them in season, not in January.
but what about when he fancies Brussel sprouts on Sunday?
A postcard and some Med toms as well Andy :o)
I loved the tomatoes in the Med...I had them for breakfast...
Fine, no problem, but if you want tastier Sprouts, eat them in season ... same as any fruit or veg really.
Brussel sprouts with tomato??? eugh...
I fancy a Greek salad now! Lol
do they grow them in the Med Naz?
Me too, Kalamata olives though, has to be.
sprouts aren't fruit there fart busters. Eugh...
"do they grow them in the Med Naz?"

If by 'they', you mean the people that grow them in the Med, then yes. lol
