out of date lentils

Hi, about 2 years ago I bought a tin of green lentils whilst on holiday in Le Puy France. Just found them in a cupboard, use by date is 12/2009. I've got loads of recipes using green lentils but would ike advice as to whether it's safe to use them. I've also got a cheaper packet that is 6 months out of date. Love them to bits, don't want to waste them if possible, don't want to give myself any stomach trouble! Thanks for any help

sorry typo error, I would LIKE advice thanks!
spoiled lentils turn to powder....if they're whole & firm, without beetle holes they can be used but wash well (3 rinses) to clear foreign dusts & insecticide.
is there anything about the kitchen you do not know tambo?
bet you don;t know where my tongs went?
i myself wouldn't risk getting gut rot.

In the 1960's some Egytian Archaeologists opened a "boat pit" near the Great Pyramid at Giza.
With the ancient boat were sealed clay pots containing vegetables and spices. The veggies(of course had shrivelled awy to dust.
However,in amongst the pots was one containing(3,000 year old) lentils. The Archaeologists took some out for an experiment.
They soaked the lentils overnight, and made a Egyptian "dhal" with them, and believe or not they were very palatable.
So I don't think you need to worry about yours!
Well, not unless they are over 3,000 years old! LOL
