Can I eat passionfruit when the skin is orange ?

I have an enormous passionfruit growing through my apple tree, they are hundreds of fruits on it, the skins are orange. I just wondered if anyone knew if they are good to eat at this stage as when shop bought they have a dark leathery skin and the seeds inside taste altogether different.
Any answers will be gratefully receieved.
