‘Low salt’, ’low fat’, ‘low sugar’, seems to be a way of life these days and often referred to by advertisers. Do you take a lot of notice? It has been going on for so long that it’s easy to forget the reasons. Will someone please remind me what is so bad about salt, fat and sugar and are there any good things one might look for instead?

In really brief.
Salt in excess screws with your blood pressure, can raise it to dangerous levels, fat is calorie dense and in excess puts weight on, hydrogenised fat is said to raise the level of bad cholesterol and clog up the arteries. Do I take much notice? No, none.

But, I don't like salt, don't really like fatty foods like pies and pastry, and I don't have a sweet tooth.
Excellent answer by woofgang.

Good answer woofgang. Thanks also to others who replied. Oh dear, how would I manage without lots of chocolate!
I remember the media headlines over the story that a doctor in a Pennsylvania mining community had shown that too much salt resulted in increased blood pressure. This report was backed up by a Welsh mining community doctor. It later transpired that this wasn't actually true in every case. But the original scare story that 'salt is bad for you' continues to be impressed upon us.
Take no notice at all. If we slavishly followed everything we'd drink no tea, no coffee, no tap water etc etc !! Use no condiments in our food.Grrrr
