I never wash them, I just wipe them with kitchen paper.
If they are very bad I knock off the worst of the compost by wiping with a cloth.
I peel them and chuck the stalks (got a thing about the stalks!).
quick rinse and Im far too lazy to peel them!
Best way is, scoop them all together into a colander, wash briskly under the tap and tip directly into the bin.
If god had intended us to eat mushrooms he would have made us all like Alice in wonderland.
I do as Vodka does.

If they have gone slightly dry, I peel them.
I just give em a brush if they're dirty.
Peel but use stalks.
The dirt on mushrooms won't do you any harm. They are grown in compost that's been sterilized.
Reading sherrardk's answer about throwing away the stalks reminded me of one of my sons friends I saw in the supermarket. He was getting some mushrooms but breaking all the stalks off.I said what you doing John,he said I don't eat the stalks so I'm not paying for them. It still amuses me when I think of it.
I do that with calabrese, Valerie.
me too tilly, in fact wherever possible I remove any bits that add to the weight but won't be eaten!
