Chef's knives

It's the daughter's birthday next month and she would like some decent knives, along with a block.
Anyone have any recommendations please....................

Ahh (thanks eccles)

I have posted a link in food and drink craft if it helps xxx
I've used all sorts of knives over the years, and have finally settled on Global. After several Christmases, I have a full range and the professional whetstone (£100 3 years ago - I'd never have bought it for myself)

They take and keep a really good edge, but need frequent little touch ups, and the design doesn't suit everyone.

The best knife I ever had was bought on Smithfield Market quite cheaply, rusted and stained at the slightest opportunity, but was designed for butchers, without any frills, just said "forged carbon steel" - no makers name.
I really agree with the until you hold the knife thing. Mine are a very mixed set, a global, a victorinox, a couple of cheapos that I like. Some cheap really old kitchen devils that fit my hand well. My latest is a filleting knife from ikea. If she is going to have a mixed set then can I suggest a noodle knife block as it will hold knives of any size or brand, it can also be taken apart for washing. I will post a link.
Like this one, bodum do one too.
