Computers in supermarkets for the customers.

We were in a couple of supermarkets this afternoon looking for wheat germ, we couldn't find any.
I kept thinking that in this day and age it would be so simple to have a touch screen computer at the end of each isle, on this computer you would enter the item you were looking for and it would display a picture/plan of exactly where that item would be found. its not rocket science!!.

And would you be prepared to pay for this?
They want you to wander around looking, as you might pick up other stuff on the way.

Notice how they keep changing the layout?
they are starting to do this in wine - I worked on a project for that overseas.....
they want you looking for things, that way you spot all the things you didnt want and find yourself buying them

besides, if you really want something can you not just ask a member of staff for help?
That would make visiting the store far too quick and convenient which is not what they want, they want you to browse and buy things you didn't know you wanted.

"And would you be prepared to pay for this?" The cost of such a scheme would minuscule for any of the larger stores.

Hopkirk, I think you have hit the nail on the head.

Well when it does take off, remember you saw it hear first!!! My idea!!
It may well be minuscule (seems it would cost more than a couple of quid to me considering initial layout, breakages etc) but I still dont want to be the one to pay for it

It's not likely to be a serious topic of consideration for any supermarket Ratter, sorry to bring a downer on it ;-)

shouldn't
Our local Tesco (not quite big enough to be a Tesco Extra) made almost £8 million pounds last year. (Council Retail Study). Who said they couldn't afford such a system?
Tesco will only spend the money if it will increase sales. This won't.
I spend less having my shopping delivered as I am notorious for impulse buying...............
Aye they seem to want me to wander around, not buying anything I didn't come in for, and then walking out in disgust at not finding what I wanted.
Couldn't you go to the desk and ask?
Must be a man - won't ask !
The staff would be tied up with all the oldies not being able to work out how to use the computer:-)
Canary - LOL
One can ask if one can find someone, then they discuss it and may not know. Go out the back, come back again, shake their head. Wlak to one end of the store, then back again. But by the time one's looked oneself, often one is too irate to want to give one's custom to the annoying store who seems to be hiding things anyway.
