hot diggity dogs

I know they're pretty grim, but does anyone know what brand of hot dogs are the best tasting?
Ive tried the ones you by in jars, which are labelled as 'American', but they never taste how I imagine American hot dogs to taste... if that makes sense?
I had one in Paris once and it was lush, but I've never been able to find a brand that tastes 'authentic'. It sounds like I've got a hot dog addiction, but I really haven't. I just fancy one now.

Ta very muchly.

The hot dog you had in Paris was probably a merguez (Moroccan sausage).
I think they're all horrible, anything which looks like a saveloy is pink and nasty - give me a proper sausage any day!

Sadly, "american" style hot dogs are what people mean nowadays, but back in the day it was a good old fashioned sausage with fried onions in a bread roll.
Did you give much thought to your phraseology before you reached for the keyboard, Boxy?

lol @ boxtops answer! Proper made me laugh.
I'm doing my online shop at the mo, so have just got some of the Herta frankfurters. I'll give them a go.
Weirdly postdog, I don't like sausages. Just these 'fake'ones.
My husband reckons that if you grill them they taste better (not that he ever has).
The ones had in US were great, doubt they actually contained anything remotely good for you, but cheap and cheery.

Grill 'em? That sounds like a lot of hassle. I was thinking more 'chuck 'em in the microwave'. Ohh, I really want one now.

And yes, em10, they are really bad when it comes to cals and nutrients. But hey, what the hell. Lets live dangerously!
I can't give you the brand names but Aldi and Lidl both sell some tasty (German) 'hot dog' type sausages.
Microwave?
That's often too much trouble for me. I often eat them straight from the can ;-)
Buenchico funny you should say that. I love Lidl's german sausage in a sub roll with fried onions and mustard. Those sausages are so tasty and so meaty you know you are biting into them.
Best possible'American' hot dogs are, of course Hebrew National... they're 100% Kosher beef and are really out of this world tasty. No artificial flavors, colors, fillers, or by-products ... just all kosher cuts of beef. They even market a 97% fat free low fat dog... I have no way of knowing if they're available in the U.K. but I highly recommend them...
Grilled for the best taste... just a little dark mustard on one of La Belle's (local eatery and bakery) sourdough buns. Some like cole slaw or sauerkraut and even chilie with cheese.
Being kosher, I presume they've had the little bit of skin cut off the ends!
Only the Mohel knows for sure, mike...
